My Parents, My In-Laws and the Example of Long Time Love

The last couple of days have left me thinking about marriage.

Last night my brother and I sat on the little couch to the side of our mothers hospital bed talking to dad while mom slept.

After a bit dad got up and went and stood by moms bed. He just stood there and watched her sleep. My brother and I watched him watch her. I think we were both teary eyed.

Mom woke up and they talked a little about how she felt and what she needed.

I couldn't help but think about the way they were with each other. I knew it hadn't came easy.

I remembered a time when we were young, dad was working away twelve hours a day, farming and helping his father farm as well. Mom was with us all the time.

Things got rough between them for awhile. I think they wondered if they would make it.

Thankfully they stuck it out, thankfully they walked through that rough season. They stayed the course.

They've been together for 52 years now and here was dad standing by her bedside watching her sleep, putting her teeth back in her mouth for her, putting her pills in her mouth and getting her a drink, checking her blankets and worrying about her sugar.

I thought about my in-laws, Marks parents.

They same is true for them.  Things were hard sometimes, there were a lot of hard days, days when it wasn't quite the way they were thinking it was going to be but they too hung on.

They will be married sixty-three years come May.

I've watched them  care for each other in the very same way.

Lowell will ask where "Mommy" is.

When Lowell was in rehab, June made his supper every night and drove it the thirty miles to town just so he could eat her food and they could eat together. She did that for weeks and weeks and when he had to go back to rehab years later she did it all over again.

It's just  a reminder to us when we think we don't want it anymore, whether we think that for a minute or for a season to hang on. There isn't a marriage out there that doesn't hit a rough patch now and again but stay the course, do what you stood before each other, others and God and said you would do.

Things will get better and one day you will be standing by the one you can't live without, the one that knows you and takes care of you like no one else could.

Today finds me thankful for parents and in-laws that kept on loving, forgiving and serving even when they didn't always feel like it and for giving us a life of security and an example of loving commitment

It's a joy to watch them reap the befits of long time love.

  1. Wonderful testimony to true love!! Wedding bands are merely symbols to the public world of love...but when two hearts are linked and two souls bound then it's true love and a strength that gets you through life!!
