Strawberry Season is Among Us!

Mark brought these in tonight and so of course you know I got around here and made him some pie crust.

He just finished off his first Strawberry Shortcake of the season.

Our family always enjoys the Strawberry season. Pies, shortcakes, bread, Strawberry Butter and Jam.

I remember my dad telling us about how years ago when his Aunt Dorothy was a teenager her mom and dad, my dad's grandparents had a large berry patch and they picked, packed and sold the berries.

My Great Aunt Dorothy wrote her name and address on the bottom of one of the berry boxes.

Some young man saw it and rode all the way down to see her.

She was excited but not for long, as the story goes my Great Grandpa ran the guy off before she even got to meet him.

In honor of my sweet Great Aunt Dorothy I'm sharing with you her Strawberry Pie recipe. It's always been my favorite.

It's a basic recipe.

Basically the best.

1 cup boiling water
3 TBSP. Strawberry Jello
3 TBSP. Cornstarch
1 cup sugar
a few drops of red food coloring

Cook until thick, then cool. Gently fold berries into the glaze and pour into a baked and cooled crust.
Refrigerate.

Some of you requested the Raisin Pie recipe so here it is. I had never had a raisin pie until I married into the Gray family. Mark loved them and when I was given a bridal shower before we married, everyone was asked to bring a recipe. Marilyn Losson brought this one. I have to admit as a young wife I let it sit in the recipe box for a little while but once I took it out, it just kept coming back out. Mark's grandpa Gray loved a raisin pie and so we took this over to his house often and of course we took a half gallon vanilla ice cream along with us. When Lucas came in the other day and saw this on the counter he said the first thing he thought of was Grandpa Herman. SANDWICH RING....IT COULD NOT BE EASIER!

The Sandwich Ring got a big response. Several of you asked about how to make it so I'm gonna to tell you. It's so not hard. It looks impressive but it's for the beginner cook. Here's what you need. 2 tubes (11 ounces each) refrigerated crusty French bread dough Bottle Italian dressing 1/2 pound sliced deli ham 1/4 pound Swiss cheese, halved 1/2 pound sliced deli Roast Beef 1/4 pound colby cheese, halved 1/2 pound sliced deli turkey 2 cups shredded lettuce 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced 1 green pepper, thinly sliced 1 medium tomato, thinly sliced sliced black olives sliced jalapeno peppers Take the two loaves of dough and put them seam side down on a greased pizza pan, forming a large ring and pinch the ends to seal it. Then take a sharp knife and make eight fairly deep slices across the top of the bread. Brush the top of the bread with Italian salad dressing. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. CABBAGE STEAKS

I shared this picture on fb and was asked for the recipe so I decided to just put it in a blog I first got this recipe from Shotgun Red. He has a YouTube channel with lots of good recipes and this is one I decided to try. Since Mark and I are cutting back on carbs and sugars this makes a great side. Here's what you are gonna need. 1 large head of cabbage 1 stick butter 2 tsp. Minced garlic 1tsp. Black pepper 1 tsp. Smoked paprika 1 tbsp. Olive oil Parmesan cheese Line a baking sheet with foil. Turn oven to 375 Remove outer leaves from cabbage Slice cabbage into at least one inch thick slices. Put them on the baking sheet in a single layer. Melt butter and all other ingredients except the cheese. Whisk well. Brush mixture all over the cabbage steaks covering well. Use all of the mixture. Bake in the oven for forty minutes. Remove from the oven and top with cheese. Return the cabbage steaks to the oven until cheese melts and is golden. I b
